Three Traditions

Same Artist.
Three Completely Different Worlds.

These three pieces were created independently but tell one unified story about the depth of Josh Mort's illustration vocabulary. Western cartoon energy. Japanese fine art tradition. American tattoo flash. Three of the most distinct visual languages in illustration — executed at the same level of quality.

That range is what separates an artist from a designer. And it's what makes this portfolio impossible to ignore.

🦈
Western Cartoon
Bold outlines, retro palette, character energy — the language of classic American animation and merch culture.
🐯
Japanese Fine Art
Ukiyo-e wave forms, kanji typography, dramatic composition — the tradition of Japanese woodblock masters.
💀
American Traditional
Bold lines, saturated color, scroll banners, roses — the oldest and most iconic visual language in tattoo art.
Piece 01 — Merch Graphic

Alpha Shark

Alpha Shark — full illustration

A premium merch graphic built around attitude and impact. A dark shark erupts from Japanese waves in front of a retro striped sunset circle — two visual worlds colliding in one composition. The stonework "ALPHA" lettering breaks out of the top with its own personality.

The Mort Art Productions signature at the bottom makes this a personal brand statement — this is Josh Mort advertising himself through his own craft.

🌅
Retro Sunset Circle
Classic 70s-80s surf and skate culture visual — horizontal stripe sunset in orange and red. Instantly nostalgic, instantly readable.
Lightning Bolt Energy
Yellow lightning bolts explode from the shark's body — power, speed, and danger in one visual shorthand that every viewer reads immediately.
🌊
Japanese Wave Forms
Teal curling waves at the base anchor the composition in the ocean while connecting to the Japanese art tradition running through multiple pieces.
🔤
Stonework Typography
The ALPHA lettering is textured like carved stone or asteroid rock — heavy, dimensional, and completely original as a type treatment.

Piece 02 — Fine Illustration

Tiga Shark

The most technically ambitious piece in the series. A tiger and shark merged into one creature — tiger stripes and markings seamlessly applied across a shark's anatomy, rising from Japanese wave forms. The kanji 武者 (Musha — "warrior") drips in blood red on a bullet-holed metal plate background.

This is where illustration becomes fine art. The rendering, the composition, the cultural literacy required to pull this off convincingly — this is gallery-level work.

🐯
Tiger-Shark Hybrid
Tiger stripe patterns rendered across shark anatomy — fins, body, head — so naturally that the hybrid feels like it could exist. This is the hardest kind of character design to pull off convincingly.
🌊
Ukiyo-e Wave Forms
The wave rendering references Hokusai's Great Wave tradition — the same curling, crashing water forms that define Japanese woodblock art, executed in digital illustration.
⛩️
Kanji — 武者 (Warrior)
Hand-brushed kanji with dripping red paint effect. The choice of "Musha" — warrior — is perfect for a tiger shark hybrid. The cultural knowledge behind the choice elevates the whole piece.
🔩
Bullet-Holed Metal Plate
The background — a riveted, bullet-scarred metal plate — adds industrial texture and narrative. This isn't just an illustration. It's a scene. Something happened here.

Piece 03 — Tattoo Flash

Old School Skull & Rose

Old School Skull and Rose — American traditional tattoo flash with tropical scene inside skull

Classic American traditional tattoo flash elevated into a full illustration. The skull becomes a window into another world — a tropical paradise with a palm tree, sunset, and waves visible inside the cranium. The rose, scroll banners, and poison bottle complete the composition.

This piece demonstrates mastery of the oldest and most iconic illustration tradition in American art history — the kind of work that every tattoo shop wall wants and every collector seeks out.

💀
The Skull as a Window
The skull isn't just a skull — it contains an entire tropical scene. Palm tree, rising sun, Japanese waves. Life inside death. The most classic symbol in tattoo art made completely new.
🌹
The Rose
Perfectly rendered deep red rose with layered petals and shadow. This is the benchmark piece of American traditional tattooing — if you can draw a convincing rose, you can draw anything.
📜
Scroll Banners
Classic scroll banner elements wrap through the composition — traditionally used for names or phrases. Left empty here, giving any client a ready-made customization point.
🧪
Poison Bottle
A corked poison bottle — unexpected, slightly sinister, and completely at home in this composition. The purple element that makes the color palette sing against the red and teal.
